Build 23. Oil Catch Tank

As per other blogs, there are no instructions in the manual that relate to this part, other than when you need to connect the overflow pipe from the dry sump tank to this catch tank. All this part does is catch any excess oil if the dry sump tank should overflow.

First it needs mounting on the chassis, it will be mounted near the front left (from the drivers perspective) between two of the chassis cross members and connected directly to the outer chassis by using two rivets. Holes for these rivets will need to be drilled, but as there are already two rivets keeping the skin on the chassis, we will drill out one of these and reutilise the hole fort his mounting bracket.

I made sure to put some masking tape on bits I wanted to protect and then I simply drilled out the right hand rivet using a 4mm drill bit. I let the drill do the work and no real effort is required to drill it out, just don't slip and it will easily come out. Next up, I offered up the mounting bracket so the right hand hole is in line with the bracket right hand hole, and I marked the other hole that I would be drilling. Once I was happy I went ahead and drilled it out.

The holes for the bracket we slightly smaller than 4mm, so I needed to widen those, for this I clamped the bracket in a drill and used the same 4mm bit to widen the holes. Once the bracket was ready, I simply used a pop rivet gun to attach the bracket using two rivets as shown below.

(N.B. Make sure you mount the bracket the right way up, I somehow mounted it upside down the first time and had to drill out the rivets again and re attach, I suppose it gave me some extra rivet drilling practice!)

I'll be cutting the hole in the top of the catch tank for the oil overflow hose when I come to the plumbing section of the build.
